Get Back to Reading

Open Book - Get Back to Reading OnFife

Getting back into reading can be challenging and frustrating and it’s often difficult to find resources and recommendations to help you select the books that you might want to read. There are so many different book and reading related websites with reviews and recommendations but working your way through these can be overwhelming.

Our library staff do everything they can to support all of our readers in selecting books, so don’t be afraid to ask for help, however sometimes you just want to browse and choose for yourself so here are some suggestions of how you can do this.

Try our Connect and Collect service via online form or a phone call, you let us know what types of book or which authors you’d like to read and our library staff will make up a bag of books ready for you to collect. You can choose up to 10 books at a time so lots of opportunity to sample books or authors and see which you prefer. To access the adult library form click here To access the junior library form click here

Dip into some of our prepared catalogue lists, here. We've got everything from Quick Reads – books which offer a route to reading with great story telling and adult focused content in an accessible and easy to read style – and short stories to some Richard and Judy favourites. These lists link directly to our catalogue so you can place requests for any titles that you might want to try.

Follow some of our library pages on Facebook for book recommendations, reviews, chat and signposting to book related websites and content. You can find our main library page at facebook.com/onfifelibraries, also facebook.com/dulochlibrary, or facebook.com/kirkcaldygalleries

For a different way of choosing books try whichbook.net. This unique website allows you to select books by mood and emotion, character and plot and even location. With recommendations based on books you may already have read and enjoyed, it’s a great way of finding your next read.

Lovereading.co.uk is another great review and recommendation site – you can search by genre, by collections, there are staff picks, awards information, debut books and a great blog with lots of extra content.

Sometimes listening to a book can be a way into reading. Downloading and listening to a book before or while reading the physical book too can give a different reading experience. There’s our fantastic free e-book, e-audio and e-magazine service available from LibbyAlthough this service gives you access to hundreds of titles.

Hope this has given you some ideas on ways to Get Back to Reading - keep checking back here for more ideas and happy reading!
